Chapter 6: "Siege" Summary
Pages 113-160
Summary:
At the Fowl Manor, Artemis’ mother’s condition continues to decline, her hallucinations becoming more consuming. Holly remains trapped in her cell, though the realization that she still has the acorn for the Ritual gives her a bit of hope. When Artemis confronts her, he manages to convince her that she has spilled the sacred secrets of her race. Uncharacteristically, Artemis feels a little bad about lying to Holly and making her feel so guilty. In order to rescue Holly, Commander Root sends in LEPretrieval One, the best group for the job. Unfortunately, Butler, equipped with makeshift goggles constructed from the remnants of Holly’s helmet, is able to see the team coming and takes them out easily. Butler sends a message back to Commander Root asking for negotiations, which Root grudgingly accepts. During the negotiations, Artemis makes it clear to Root that he knows their retrieval protocol and has a plan to defeat it.Characters:

Recommended Literacy Strategies:
Compare & Contrast: Venn Diagram - create two circles that overlap in the middle and on one side have one subject and the other a different subject, in the middle put similarities between the two and differences in the rest of the circles (recommended for LEPretrieval One fight from the fairies' and Butler's perspectives)Character Trait Reflection - list out three characters and write one word attributes of each, pick two characters and write actions related to their attributes, then pick one character and explain why they behave the way they do and how they will act in the future
Anticipation Guide - worksheet with three sections: a brief summary of the three most important parts of in the plot (according to the reader), a character list with as much information about the character the reader can think of, and a list of three predictions for the upcoming reading that they can support with evidence to be revisited after reading the next section (recommended for the end of Chapter 6)
Cause and Effect - diagram illustrating how events are connected, where one box contains an event and is connected to a box containing the results of the event by an arrow (recommended to use with Artemis' kidnapping of Holly and how the retrieval procedures fall into his plan)
Discussion Topics:
-How do you feel about Lieutenant Cudgeon being so willing to risk Holly's life, especially since she is a female officer?-Is it significant that Artemis is feeling guilty about making Holly believe she betrayed her people and their secrets?
-Do you think Artemis really knows how to escape the time field?
-How do you think Juliet's indirect and nonspecific instructions for Holly will affect the plot later in the book?
Questions:
-Will Holly be rescued or manage to escape herself?-Where did Angeline Fowl go?
-What is Artemis' plan?
-Will Root give Artemis the hostage gold?
-Will the bio-bomb be used on the Fowl Manor?
