Chapter 9: "Ace in the Hole" and Epilogue Summary

Summary:

With the troll dealt with, the fairies move along with their plan to give Artemis the ransom money, recover Holly, and then bio-bomb Fowl Manor. Lieutenant Cudgeon is deposed and Commander Root regains authority, ordering the gold to be transported in. After Artemis receives the gold but before Holly leaves, Artemis bargains for a wish. When Holly is returned to the fairies, she comes with half of the gold. To celebrate getting the gold, Artemis toasts Juliet and Butler with drugged champagne, a drink he also takes himself, putting them all to sleep. The bio-bomb is sent in, but when the fairies try to enter Fowl Manor they all get sick as the magic prevents them from entering as they were not invited in. This is a result of Artemis figuring out a way to escape the time field, and keep the gold in the process. Once Artemis and Butler have woken up, Artemis is forced to explain himself. Artemis then proceeds to check on his mother, who is miraculously cured of her hallucinations and mental problems. Holly becomes the foremost authority on Artemis Fowl cases.

Summary:

Back underground, Foaly calls in Commander Root to alert him to the fact that Holly had been captured by a human. Though her helmet camera was down and the human voice was unrecognizable, Holly’s locator was still transmitting. Wanting to send in the very best recon officers for the mission, Commander Root reactivates himself and jumps on the next flare to the surface. Meanwhile, Artemis was investigating the fairy technology and realized that Holly had a tracker. To send a message, Artemis has Butler cause a distraction down at the docks while Artemis does some confidential work. While flying over Ireland, Commander Root spots Holly’s locator going off shore. In a hurry, Root reaches the boat and when he finally finds the locator he is surprised to find not Holly, but transmitter and a bomb. With a brief recorded message from Artemis, the bomb explodes and Root barely escapes the fiery ship.

Summary:

 

We first meet Captain Holly Short as she is preparing for another day as a LEPrecon officer, a sort of Special Forces police service. A fairy, Holly is the first female LEPrecon officer and so struggles with her coworkers and proving herself to her boss, Commander Root. In an attempt to prove herself, Holly volunteers to go topside and do recon on a renegade troll. New assignment in hand, Holly visits Foaly to prep for the mission before finally going to the surface where she finds the troll breaking into a restaurant. With the Retrieval team too far away, Holly goes in and fights the troll but reveals herself as she runs out of magic. When Commander Root and the Retrieval team finally arrive, Holly is ordered to go complete the Ritual to replenish her magic while the troll’s mess is cleaned up.

Summary:

After their makeovers, the Flock heads towards the ocean and rests on the shore. While the Gazzy and Angel are playing in the ocean, Angel goes missing but when she reappears it is discovered that she can breathe underwater. That night, the Erasers catch up with the Flock at the beach. Fang and Ari get into a deadly fight, only to have Jeb pull Ari and the rest of the Erasers back, leaving Fang lying limp on the beach. In a surprising show of emotion, Max kisses Fang after telling him to get better. The Flock then returns to the subway tunnels, once again trying to find the Institute. With help from the Voice, Max tracks down the secret entrance. Inside the Institute laboratory, Max finds files on the Flock, including information about their parents, as well as other mutants locked in cages. While the mutants and Flock members are leaving the Institute lab, Ari appears and fights Max. During the fight, Max breaks Ari’s neck. Jeb’s voice echoes after her as the Flock escapes, telling Max that she killed her own brother. Back above the ground, Max discovers that Angel wants to keep a dog mutant she found and after much debate, Fang allows Angel to keep Total. The Flock once again makes camp on a beach and every member looks through their files, discovering who their parents were and that they all lived in the relatively same area. Max agrees that their next move will be to try and find the Flock’s parents and more answers to why they are the way that they are.

Summary:

After running from the building that supposedly housed the Institute, Gazzy has a bit of a breakdown and in an effort to appease him, Max allows him to pick wherever he wants to eat. Gazzy chooses a very posh restaurant and after placing their very large order, the manager comes to speak with the Flock. Believing that they cannot eat all the food they ordered, Max and the manager start arguing, finally ending in the Flock flying through the roof of the restaurant to avoid being arrested. Escaping to a wooded area, the Flock finds themselves surrounded by Erasers, including Ari who has Angel’s bear. Angel then commands Ari to return the bear, an act he seemed to do against his will, but the Erasers do not attack per previous orders. As the Erasers are called away by the Director, the Flock decides they need to change their appearances. Wandering around New York, they come across a salon giving free makeovers and quickly take up the free offer.

Summary:

Max catches up with Fang and Nudge above Lake Mead and is surprised to find Iggy and Gazzy there as well. After everyone catching each other up on what had happened since they all split, the Flock members continue on their mission to rescue Angel. Along the way, the take money from a rude man after he forgot to sign off his ATM transaction and “borrow” a van to drive them closer to the School. But as they are nearing the area of the School, the Flock members stop for food and are attacked by Erasers. The Erasers finally catch them in a corn field, though Iggy and Gazzy escape. Max, Fang, and Nudge are then taken to the School where they find Angel alive and discover that Jeb is still alive. Jeb tells Max that it is her job to save the world and then sends Max, Fang, Nudge, and Angel off to be killed by the Erasers. During the fight, Iggy and Gazzy reappear with the hawks from above Lake Mead who help distract the Erasers enough for the whole Flock to escape.
