Part 5 (a): "The Voice--Make That My Voice" Summary
Pages 269-319
Summary:
In the subway tunnel, Max starts hearing a voice in her head that helps her find the Institute the Flock was looking for. While they are searching for the Institute of Higher Living, the Voice insists that Max and the Flock have a little fun and go to a toy store in New York. At the toy store, Angel becomes attached to a bear dressed as an angel and convinces an older woman to buy it for her when Max won’t. As they are leaving the toy store, the Erasers catch up to the Flock and one Eraser grabs Max and runs. As Max tries to fight him off, he eventually just drops dead having reached his expiration date after only five years. Max then finds a credit card with her name on it for the Flock to use but before they get a chance to figure out the password, the police start chasing the Flock. Though the Flock manages to escape, Celeste the bear is left behind and Angel is distraught. After spending some time in a church (where everyone in the Flock prays despite not being religious), the Flock figure out the password to the credit card is “mother.”Characters:

Recommended Literacy Strategies:
Semantic Map - bubble chart with topic in the central bubble and different parts branch off of the central circle (recommended for mapping each Flock members' prayers, maybe find a way to distinguish between self-serving/non self-serving prayers)Character Trait Reflection - list out three characters and write one word attributes of each, pick two characters and write actions related to their attributes, then pick one character and explain why they behave the way they do and how they will act in the future
Dilemma Diagram - create a Venn diagram chart with an issue/problem in the overlapping middle area and fill in the two sides with two different ways to look at the issue/problem; follow up by writing what you would do in the situation (recommended topic: would you trust the Voice?)
Discussion Topics:
-Now that we have been shown a little more of the Voice, do you think that Max and the Flock can trust it?-Why do you think Angel is so attached to Celeste the bear?
-In your opinion, was Angel influencing the woman to buy her the bear wrong?
-What do you think about the Flock praying in the church?
Questions:
-Do the members of the Flock have expiration dates like the Erasers do?-Why is Angel now able to project her thoughts onto others when she wasn't able to before?
-How did Angel know the password to the credit card?
