Part 4: "New Yawk, New Yawk" Summary
Pages 215-266
Summary:
After escaping the Institute, the Flock starts traveling to New York hoping to find answers about their pasts at a place called the Institute. On their way, Max starts to have searing headaches that render her incapable of flying with no explanation or warning. Angel tells the Flock that they weren’t test-tube babies at all and though dismayed by this knowledge, the group continues on and finally make it to New York. In New York, the Flock narrowly escapes capture by the Erasers by slipping into the zoo on a school only day. Later when the Flock tries to take the subway, Iggy hears something off so the Flock run into the tunnels on their own, finding an underground community of people. Max has another attack that interferes with someone’s computer while they’re in the subway tunnels.

Recommended Literacy Strategies:
Double-Entry Diary - chart with two columns, the first for a passage or quote from the book and the other for a connection or question related to that particular passage/quoteWould You Rather? - create a set of questions with two different choice (such as: would you rather know you have parents that gave you up or not know at all?) and have readers answer them
Anticipation Guide - worksheet with three sections: a brief summary of the three most important parts of in the plot (according to the reader), a character list with as much information about the character the reader can think of, and a list of three predictions for the upcoming reading that they can support with evidence to be revisited after reading the next section (recommended for the end of Part 4)
Discussion Topics:
-Was Angel right to tell the Flock what she had overheard about their parents? Should she not have waited so long to tell them? Should she have waited longer?-Of the members of the Flock, whose parental situation would you rather have? Whose do you think is the worst?
-If you had lived a life similar to that of the Flock members, what part of New York would be most surprising to you?
-Why do you think Max is having the crazy headaches?
Questions:
-What is causing Max's headaches?-Where (and what) is the Institute?
-What happens when the Flock runs out of money in New York?
