Part 2 (b): "Hotel California, Sort Of" Summary
Pages 107-156
Summary:
Max wakes up in the Martinez’s house, where Ella and her mom have been taking care of her. Ella’s mom takes Max to her veterinary office to get an X-Ray of her injured shoulder done and discovers a tracking device, like a chip, in her shoulder. Dr. Martinez refuses to remove it as Max could lose the use of her arm and Max leaves the next day, hoping to catch up with Nudge and Fang. Meanwhile, Iggy and Gazzy barely escape from the Erasers with their lives, blowing the tree house apart with their homemade bomb. With nowhere else to go, the two boys decide to try and catch up with the rest of the Flock on their mission to save Angel. While waiting for Max, Nudge and Fang happen upon the trailer park where Nudge’s mom lives. Nudge is disappointed by the woman she sees but before she can confront her, Erasers attack them. Barely escaping, Nudge and Fang head back to the caves above Lake Mead to hide out and plan their next move. Back at the School, Angel is still being forced to run tests, though she uses her ability to read minds to give her an advantage. After more tests are run, one of the scientists comes over to help her and Angel is surprised to see Jeb. Jeb offers Angel kindness, saying that he won’t let the other scientists hurt her but Angel doesn’t know if she can trust him.

Recommended Literacy Strategies:
Stereotype Log - chart with three columns for a. character's name, b. the character's traits, and c. the traits that portray a stereotype (recommended for identifying what stereotypes each Flock member fills)Dual Setting Chronology - parallel timelines tracking the plot in different places (recommended to keep track of what is happening with each group [Max, Angel, Nudge/Fang, Iggy/Gazzy] from the beginning until the timelines merge)
Double-Entry Diary - chart with two columns, the first for a passage or quote from the book and the other for a connection or question related to that particular passage/quote
Discussion Topics:
-What stereotypes does each Flock member fill? Is there a certain reason that they are each a very different type of person?-What do you think happened with Jeb? How did he get back to the School?
-Which character group (Angel, Max, Nudge/Fang, or Gazzy/Iggy) would you want to be a part of and why?
-Is it significant that the idea of parents keeps being brought up throughout the book? Why or why not?
Questions:
-Will Max find the rest of the Flock?-Was the woman in Arizona actually Nudge's mom or are the members of the Flock test-tube babies?
-Why is Jeb at the School?
-Does everyone have the chip in them or just Max?
